How are The Place's cakes sorted by sweetness?

Cakes at The Place are finished with real dairy fresh cream, and the menu splits into two lines by how sweet the cake is: Lightly Sweet and 0 Sugar Added. Keto · Flourless is a version inside the 0 Sugar Added line, so it sits within the second group rather than beside it.

Line or version Sweetened with Flour Eggless option Cakes on the menu*
Lightly Sweet Cane sugar, lightly sweetened Yes Many cakes, +$5 66
0 Sugar Added No added cane sugar (see each cake's ingredients) Yes Not available 33
Keto · Flourless (inside 0 Sugar Added) No cane sugar No flour of any kind Not available 31

*At the time of writing. Keto cakes are counted inside the 0 Sugar Added line.

All three lines use the same cream and the same sizes, and the cakes look the same on the table. In one line: choose Lightly Sweet when nobody has asked for anything, 0 Sugar Added when someone skips cane sugar, and Keto · Flourless when someone avoids flour. The version is what changes the sweetening and the flour. On the website, the 0 Sugar Added and Keto designs name their line in the title and the Cake lines menu lists each line on its own.

What is the difference between Lightly Sweet, 0 Sugar Added and Keto?

The difference is the sweetener and the flour. Lightly Sweet uses cane sugar and is less sweet than a typical supermarket cake. 0 Sugar Added has no added cane sugar and keeps the flour, with a Japanese chiffon texture. Keto goes one step further and leaves the flour out as well.

The clearest way to compare them is a single design offered in all three versions. The Smiley Smash Cake is one of them:

Version Smiley Smash Cake, 6 inch from Cane sugar Flour
Lightly Sweet $50.95 Yes, lightly sweetened Yes
0 Sugar Added $58.95 No added cane sugar Yes
Keto · Flourless $66.95 No No flour of any kind, wheat or almond

Prices are pre-order prices at the time of writing, and your cart shows the final price. The Smiley Smash Cake comes in 6, 8 and 10 inch, which serve 6 to 8, 12 to 14 and 18 to 22 normal dessert slices. Flavour choices are set cake by cake, so check the product page: the Smiley offers seven cream flavours, from Vanilla to Black Sesame, in every version. Every version can also carry a hand-piped message for +$1.00.

The Keto version uses ingredients such as cream cheese, eggs and coconut oil in place of flour. Both 0 Sugar Added and Keto are sweetened without cane sugar: see each cake's ingredients, listed on our ingredients page, for exactly what goes in.

Which version should I choose for my celebration?

Choose by who is at the table and what they have asked for, since the cakes look the same and the cream is the same. There is no better or worse line here; each version fits a different guest list.

  • Lightly Sweet suits a party where nobody has asked for anything in particular. It is the widest range: 66 cakes at the time of writing, with the eggless option on many of them.
  • 0 Sugar Added suits a table where someone has asked for a cake without added cane sugar, and still wants a sponge that contains flour.
  • Keto · Flourless suits a table where someone has asked for a cake without flour, or where a cake with no flour of any kind is the point.

A family birthday with one guest who skips cane sugar is a good example: a Lightly Sweet cake for the table, plus a 0 Sugar Added mini cake for that guest, keeps everyone served without changing the look of the party. You choose one version for each cake. If your guests want different versions, you can order two cakes, or a main cake plus a few 2.75-inch mini cakes in 0 Sugar Added or Keto. The mini cakes are about $17 to $24 each. On the product page, the version picker lists Keto, 0 Sugar Added and the cane-sugar option. Lightly Sweet is the cane-sugar one.

Is a "sugar-free" cake the same as 0 Sugar Added?

Many people use that word, but the term we use is 0 Sugar Added, because it says exactly what we did: no cane sugar is added to the cake. It describes what goes into the recipe, and it does not mean that every ingredient is free of natural sugar.

Dairy and fruit carry sugars of their own. One of our product pages notes that seasonal berry toppings may contain fructose sugar, for example. So 0 Sugar Added is a statement about added sugar, and each cake's ingredient list tells you the rest.

For a longer explanation of the term and what changes in the cake, read what 0 Sugar Added means on a cake.

What does Keto · Flourless mean on the menu?

Keto · Flourless means a cake made without flour and without cane sugar, using ingredients such as cream cheese, eggs and coconut oil, still finished with real dairy fresh cream. It is the flourless version inside the 0 Sugar Added line, and it is marked clearly on the product page.

The page describes it in plain words: no cane sugar, and no flour of any kind (wheat or almond). If you want to see what a Keto cake looks like in practice, Choco Vital offers 0 Sugar Added from $69.95 and Keto from $77.95 at 6 inch, and has an Express version for same-day. The full explanation is in what is a keto cake. The hub for every 0 Sugar Added and Keto design is the 0 Sugar Added collection.

How do the prices compare between versions?

On the design that comes in all three versions, 0 Sugar Added costs a little more than Lightly Sweet, and Keto a little more than 0 Sugar Added. The table shows 6-inch pre-order prices on cakes that come in more than one version.

Cake Lightly Sweet 0 Sugar Added Keto · Flourless
Smiley Smash Cake $50.95 $58.95 $66.95
Milk Tea Cloud Not offered $68.95 $76.95
Choco Vital Not offered $69.95 $77.95
Vital 4 Mini Cake Set (four minis) Not offered $68.95 $78.95

These are prices from the smallest size at the time of writing, and your cart shows the final price. Some designs live in only one line: Milk Tea Cloud, Choco Vital and the Vital 4 set are made in 0 Sugar Added and Keto only. The Vital 4 set is a handy way to try the range, because it packs four mini cakes in one box in either version.

What are the limits when I order a version?

Four limits apply, and it helps to know them before you choose.

  • Eggless: the eggless option is available on many Lightly Sweet cakes for +$5, and it cannot be combined with 0 Sugar Added or Keto, because the eggless recipe is made with sugar and flour. It covers the cake and cream of the main cake only, and decorations may still contain egg.
  • Allergens: 0 Sugar Added is about sugar only. Every cake contains dairy, and egg unless you add the eggless option to a Lightly Sweet cake. The sponge is made with flour in every version except Keto. Our kitchen handles dairy, egg, wheat, soy, peanuts and tree nuts every day, so we cannot guarantee that any cake is free of any allergen. Tell us in the cart note and confirm by phone or email.
  • Timing: pre-orders run from the day after tomorrow to 180 days ahead. Same-day and next-day orders are only possible for cakes with Express in the name, and Sunday does not take same-day orders. The Smiley Smash Cake has no Express version.
  • Portions: serving counts are a guide only. When you are between two sizes, go bigger; leftovers keep well in the fridge overnight.

The cream is the same in every version, so the care instructions are the same too: refrigerate the cake in its box within an hour, do not freeze it, and serve it straight from the fridge. Keep it at room temperature for no more than two hours in total, or one hour on a hot day. Delivery fees and time windows are a guide, and your cart shows the final fee. If you are still unsure which version to pick, call +1 (888) 356-9099 or email Contact@ThePlaceToronto.com before you order.

Questions, answered.

Is a 0 Sugar Added cake made with fresh cream too?

Yes. Lightly Sweet and 0 Sugar Added cakes are both finished with the same real dairy fresh cream. The difference is how the cake is sweetened: cane sugar in Lightly Sweet, and no added cane sugar in 0 Sugar Added. Keto is a flourless version inside the 0 Sugar Added line.

Can I get an eggless cake in the 0 Sugar Added or Keto version?

No. The eggless option is available on many Lightly Sweet cakes for +$5, but it cannot be combined with 0 Sugar Added or Keto, because the eggless recipe is made with sugar and flour. Our kitchen also handles egg daily, so eggless means no egg added, not no contact.

Do 0 Sugar Added cakes cost more?

It depends on the cake. On the Smiley Smash Cake at 6 inch, Lightly Sweet starts at $50.95, 0 Sugar Added at $58.95 and Keto at $66.95. Prices are pre-order prices at the time of writing, and your cart shows the final price.

How many Lightly Sweet, 0 Sugar Added and Keto cakes are there?

At the time of writing, our website lists 66 Lightly Sweet cakes, 33 cakes in the 0 Sugar Added line and 31 Keto, flourless cakes. Keto cakes are counted inside 0 Sugar Added. The numbers change as the menu changes.

Can I order a 0 Sugar Added cake for the same day?

Only cakes with Express in the name can be made for same-day or next-day, and some 0 Sugar Added and Keto designs have an Express version. Same-day orders close at 2:30 PM, Monday to Saturday. Sunday does not take same-day orders. Everything else is a pre-order from the day after tomorrow.
