What cake flavours can I choose at The Place?

Many of our cakes let you choose from up to 13 cream flavours, and the rest are signature cakes built around one flavour. The Place is a fresh-cream cake kitchen in Markham delivering across Toronto and the GTA, so the flavour sits mainly in the cream over a soft Japanese chiffon sponge. The 13 are Vanilla, Salted Caramel, Tiramisu, Coconut Latte, Soya Milk, Mango Oolong, Rose Lychee, Black Sesame, Matcha, Milk Tea, Chocolate, Strawberry and Strawberry Brulee. The range on each cake varies, so the product page is the final word.

The table uses the short descriptions from our product pages, and names cakes built around each flavour. Prices are the pre-order "from" price for a 6 inch at the time of writing. On cakes with a flavour picker the flavour can change the price a little: Birthday Buddy 6 inch is $69.95 in Vanilla or Salted Caramel and $77.95 in Strawberry Brulee. Which flavour should I pick?

Start with what the person already orders at a cafe or dessert counter, then match it to the table. A coffee drinker will like Tiramisu, Coconut Latte or a coffee-led signature cake such as Golden Toffee Latte. Someone who drinks tea will look at Milk Tea, Matcha or Mango Oolong. For fruit, Strawberry and Strawberry Brulee are the bright ones, and Rose Lychee is the floral choice. Black Sesame and Soya Milk suit people who like nutty, quieter flavours. Chocolate and Vanilla are the easy options for a mixed group.

Tiramisu Nouveau is the one to start with if tiramisu is the flavour you want: it is a Lightly Sweet cake in real fresh cream, from $62.95 for a 6 inch, $92.95 for an 8 inch and $127.95 for a 10 inch, and it has an Express version for same-day. Where can I get a matcha cake in Toronto?

The Place makes Matcha White Chocolate, a matcha cake with Belgian white chocolate in light fresh cream, from $68.95 for a 6 inch, $98.95 for an 8 inch and $133.95 for a 10 inch. The page describes it in clean lines of green and ivory. It has an Express version for same-day, you can collect it free from our Markham kitchen, and delivery covers Toronto, North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan and the rest of the core GTA.

There are other ways to get matcha:

• Matcha as a cream flavour: choose it on cakes with the flavour picker, described as earthy green tea.
• Zen Matcha: a 0 Sugar Added and Keto (flourless) cake, with swirls in calm green; its page says it is made with ceremonial Japanese matcha. From $74.95 for a 6 inch in 0 Sugar Added, $82.95 in Keto, and it has an Express version for same-day.
• Matcha Veil Mini Cake: a single-serve mini cake in Keto and 0 Sugar Added, from $18.95 in 0 Sugar Added.

Which flavours come as 0 Sugar Added or Keto?

Several do, but the lists are shorter than for Lightly Sweet cakes. 0 Sugar Added cakes use the same real dairy fresh cream and Japanese chiffon with no cane sugar added; Keto cakes are flourless. • Dreamy Pastel and Retro Charm: Vanilla, Strawberry, Soya Milk, Black Sesame, Peanut Chocolate, Coconut Cafe Latte and Dark Chocolate.
• Smiley Smash Cake: Vanilla, Tiramisu, Coconut Latte, Strawberry, Matcha, Strawberry Brulee and Black Sesame.
• Flavour-named cakes: Tiramisu Bloom, Zen Matcha, Milk Tea Cloud, Black Sesame Essence, Choco Vital and Creamy Coco Espresso.
• Small sizes: the Keto and 0 Sugar Added line also has 12 oz boxes and mini cakes in flavours such as Tiramisu, Black Sesame, Milk Tea, Chocolate and Coconut Latte.

Two limits apply. 0 Sugar Added is only about sugar, so these cakes still contain milk and eggs, and the 0 Sugar Added version contains wheat flour. And Make it eggless cannot be added to a 0 Sugar Added or Keto cake, because the eggless recipe is made with sugar and flour.

What about cakes built around one flavour?

Some of our recipes have a fixed flavour and no picker. The table lists a few, with what each product page says about it.

How do I order the flavour I want?

Pick the cake first, then the version, size and cream flavour on its product page. Pre-orders open from the day after tomorrow and go up to 180 days ahead, and the full menu is available, including 0 Sugar Added and Keto. Only cakes with Express in the name can be made same-day: order by 2:30 PM, Monday to Saturday, for evening delivery between 5:30 and 10:30 PM. Sunday takes pre-orders only.

Sizes serve as a guide: 6 to 8 for a 6 inch, 12 to 14 for an 8 inch and 18 to 22 for a 10 inch as normal dessert slices. If you are between sizes, go bigger; leftovers keep well in the fridge overnight. Core GTA delivery is $4.95 for orders of $30 to $85 and free from $85, a guide that your cart confirms.
